Mir Naqibul Islam

Instructor, NYC Tabla

Mir Naqibul Islam is a genre-bending tabla player of the Farrukhabad gharana (school of tabla playing), originally from Bangladesh and now based in New York. A disciple of Pandit Ashoke Paul and the legendary Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, he has spent over two decades immersed in rigorous tabla training and performance.

As a performing artist, he presents solo tabla concerts and regularly collaborates across the Hindustani classical spectrum, accompanying vocalists, dancers, and instrumentalists such as sitar, sarod, santoor and other string traditions. His work also extends beyond classical boundaries into jazz, maqam, western classical, African and cross-cultural projects, and he has been an active member of Brooklyn Raga Massive, contributing to the contemporary world-music renaissance.

As an educator, Mir teaches with patience, empathy, and deep commitment to each student’s individual journey. He believes tabla is a living language—its depth and breadth are infinite—and that every student can grow over time with the right guidance, discipline, and curiosity. His teaching blends traditional oral methods with modern learning tools, including recordings and digital resources, to support clarity and progress. While maintaining a supportive environment, he challenges students thoughtfully, helping them develop confidence, focus, and a lasting love for rhythm. For him, teaching is a collaborative process—one that balances structure and inspiration, tradition and innovation, and steady growth at a pace that suits each learner.
